Last Sunday, I hosted my first in-person event in 2 1/2 years and it was SO FREAKING GOOD to be in community again!!!

I led a small workshop at Fruitsuper here in Seattle on learning to love yourself more. The women who attended shared vulnerably and courageously about:

  • Their struggles with their bodies

  • Disordered eating

  • Adult acne

  • Being made fun of as a kid for how you look

  • Receiving extreme praise from family after weight loss

  • Deciding not to wear makeup to work

  • Constantly thinking about how other people are perceiving you

  • Feeling hesitant to take up space at work and school

It was a really excellent conversation.

One of the parts of the workshop that really resonated for people was the section on Cleaning Up Your (Digital & IRL) Environment.

So I thought I’d share a little about that here in case it’s helpful for you too.

It can be really hard to feel good about yourself when you’re bombarded with posts and ads that glorify: thin bodies, flawless skin, diets and workout apps.

I tell all my clients who want to grow their confidence to Audit. That. Shit.

Step 1: Unfollow, Block, Mute and opt-out of all content that gives you even a tiny pang of feeling bad about yourself. No one has to know. This is strictly for you. And you can always re-follow, unblock and un-mute later if you want to.

Step 2: Now that you’ve taken content out, it’s time to put some good content in! Start following people who remind you that you’re great exactly as you are.

This can be people who specifically create self-love content (like moi!). Or it can just be people, brands, blogs and newsletters that aren’t triggering and that leave you feeling good about yourself.

I personally follow a mix of self-love/body-love experts, inclusive brands, authors, activists and plus-size models. Following these folks is an easy, easy way to receive subtle reminders all day long that you’re ok as you are.

Those repeated messages of enough-ness gradually add up to a shift in the way you view yourself and others.
